This VME based system was developed while employed at Ursel Systems. It
gathered information about aircraft position and orientation from the
onboard Inertial Reference Unit (IRU), Loran, Omega and GPS sensors using
the ARINC429 standard. After processing to remove artifacts and formatting
to improve readability, the information was sent using RS422 to a number
of remote display units distributed amongst various observation ports
throughout the aircraft. Raw positional data was sent, via the VME backplane,
to another processor card implementing a flight management function which
allowed the operator to enter waypoint data and track aircraft position.
This system
used off the shelve hardware available from DY-4 Systems (now Curtiss-Wright).
Firmware was developed using a combination of C and assembly language
programming running under the VRTX o/s.
